Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Telling a Tale of One Ship with Two Names: Queen Anne’s Revenge and La Concorde" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Through the installation of a demonstration laboratory at the Beaufort North Carolina Maritime Museum, the North Carolina Maritime Museum System and the Queen Anne’s Revenge Project have worked together to increase the educational impact of the Queen Anne’s Revenge (QAR) exhibit. The introduction of real-time conservation work on QAR artifacts and the presence of a professional conservator as part of the gallery experience have sought to raise public awareness and understanding of cultural heritage professions, as well as, to enhance the narrative value of the exhibit by facilitating a more immersive experience between the visitor, the artifacts, and the people charged with their care and interpretation. This presentation will discuss the intricacies of the outreach experience, its role as both exhibit functionary and subject, and examine the challenges involved in communicating complex historical narratives from a fragmentary body of material evidence irrevocably transformed by time and degradation.
