Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "The Wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror National Historic Site of Canada: 2016-2019 Underwater Archaeological Investigations" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
The use of 3D digital recording methods is now commonplace in underwater archaeology and one of the more established and accessible methods is without a doubt digital photogrammetry. This technology has been used in conjunction with other techniques to record the wreck of HMS Erebus (and to a limited extent HMS Terror). This paper will describe the methodology used by Parks Canada to collect primary data, process and model HMS Erebus in 3D, and output models for both research and outreach aims, including various GIS/CAD softwares, 3D prints, traditional ship models and site plans and drawings. It will demonstrate how the combined use of different recording methods, both 2D and 3D, gave us the opportunity to evaluate photogrammetry results and juxtapose 3D photogrammetric models with data from other recording techniques, such as multi-beam echosounder and the direct survey method (DSM).
