Summary

This report is an inventory of physical and literary properties and relics associated with the Cold War heritage of US. Army Alaska (USARAK). During the Cold War the Army in Alaska was tasked with a number of missions. During World War II, the Army was responsible for ground defense of Alaska. Throughout most of the Cold War, US. Army Alaska faced this challenge with a force of about 10,000 soldiers. The Army was also a major participant in the joint air defense of Alaska and provided surface-to-air antiaircraft defense. Environmental characteristics of Alaska's posts provided the Army with unique opportunities for cold weather training, equipment testing, and warfare doctrine development. The Army also fulfilled other roles in Alaska. It supported Air Force and Navy operations, trained Alaska Army National Guard and US. Army Reserve personnel, and provided internal security for the state. The Cold War saw the Army in Alaska evolve from two mechanized brigades to a streamlined global contingency force; the primary Cold War doctrinal contribution of the Army in Alaska was the development of the northern "light infantry." This inventory of Cold War properties concentrates on the three USARAK posts: Fort Richardson, Fort Wainwright, and Fort Greely (excluding properties identified for closure by BRAC). Each post played a significant role in USARAK's Cold War mission.
