Author(s): John H. Cloe

Year: 2002

Summary

This study was prepared in part to satisfy the need to document the planning, recovery, restoration, and display of Lockheed P-38G-10-LO, serial number 42-13400, the "Lightning". The Lightning is the only one remaining of the 1,082 G models produced during World War II. It is one of approximately 26 Lightnings remaining of the 10,038 produced. It was also the first aircraft to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The study also provides additional documentation supporting the submittal of National Park Service Form 10-900, “National Register of Historic Places Registration Form,” changing the location of P-38G-10-LO from Temnac Valley, Attu Island, to Elmendorf AFB.
