Summary
Panamerican conducted archival research and fieldwork for an ethnographic study of the Cape Fish Co. site (8BR239) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Brevard County, Florida. The investigations involved an ethnohistoric approach integrating archival, historical, oral, and video, methods with an archeological review in order to better understand the lifeways of the inhabitants and local economy. During the project, eight informants were formally interviewed using a structured questionnaire developed for the project, and 13 additional interviews were conducted without the use of the questionnaire. Archival research provided data for a detailed cartographic review of the site's location, in addition to the recovery and/or review of other archival information. Also, a significant number of archival photos from private and public collections were inspected during the investigation. Based on the recovered information, a historic context and local history was prepared, and a detailed site chronology (timeline) was developed. The results reveal that Site 8BR239 is a locally unique example of an extractive site associated with the brief shark liver oil manufacturing industry in the U.S., and this site later developed into an isolated fishing village. It is a well-preserved single-component surface scatter that can still potentially contribute significant information to our understanding of the early commercial fishing industry on the Cape specifically, and more generally regarding early commercial fishing on Florida's Atlantic coast, as well as to a better understanding of lifeways on the Cape prior to the establishment of the Space Center. As such, we submit that 8BR239 is potentially eligible for NRHP nomination under Criterion D (broad patterns), and offer suggestions for future fieldwork at the site.
