Summary

Upon review of several documents pertaining to cultural resources at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) it was determined that an adequate assessment had not been conducted to determine if the launch complex and/or the facilities within were eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). In addition, several of the facilities within the complex are targeted for demolition in the fiscal years 2013 and 2014.

The Civil Engineering Squadron/Environmental and Natural Assets Division (CES/CEAN), 45th Space Wing (45 SW) conducted a survey in September 2012 to determine if the Facility 49800: Heavy Equipment Shop (8BR2480) was NRHP eligible. Facility 49800 is eligible for listing on the NRHP due to its unique construction. While similar to a Quonset hut in appearance it was constructed of vertical metal panels riveted together to create a free-standing structure which did not need a frame. It was also constructed as a prototype launch shelter in support of the Goose/Bull Goose missile program.
