Author(s): Ellen Turco; Mary Beth Reed

Year: 2018

Summary

Under contract with Potomac-Hudson Engineering (PHE) to support Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC), New South Associates completed the Historic Architecture Survey of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS), part of the 45th Space Wing, United States Air Force (USAF). The project recorded 93 resources in nine discontinuous areas within the approximately 16,239-acre base located north of the City of Cape Canaveral on Florida's east coast in Brevard County. Each resource was assessed individually and as a component of a potential district for its historic value in the context of national Cold War history. The resources surveyed were evaluated for NRHP eligibility primarily on the basis of links to historic trends and events associated with the Cold War and space exploration.

Of the 93 resources documented in this survey report, seven (BR3467, BR3478, BR3483, BR3490, BR3497, BR3499, and BR3501) rose to a level of exceptional historical importance and are recommended individually eligible for the NRHP under Criterion A. Eleven areas were evaluated as potential historic districts: the Integrate Transfer-Launch (ITL) Area; the Satellite Processing Area (Area 59); the Solid Fuel Storage Area #2 (FSA #2); the Liquid Fuel Storage Area #4 (FSA #4); the Port Area; the Graduate Engineering Education System (GENESYS) Complex; the Missile Checkout Area (MACA); the Hangar Y Area; the Launch Complex 25/29/MACA/Hangar Y Area; the Liquid Oxygen (LOX) Area; and the Naval Ordnance Test Unit (NOTU) Support Area. Five of these 11 areas are recommended as NRHP-eligible historic districts under Criterion A: GENESYS Complex, the Hangar Y Area, the MACA, and the TTL Area.
