Mid-Reach Sand Stockpile, Brevard County, Florida, Submerged Cultural Resources Survey and Terrestrial Archaeological and Magnetometer Survey

Summary

This report presents the results of a remote sensing survey in support of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District project to dredge sand from the Canaveral Shoals II borrow area and stockpile the sand on the beach at Spessard Holland South Beach Park for secondary transport by truck to Brevard Mid-Reach beach located approximately midway between Port Canaveral and Sebastian Inlet. Fieldwork identified two targets consisting of anomaly clusters considered to have the potential to represent significant historic cultural resources within the near shore and beach face areas. Additionally, a previously located eighteenth-century cannon (possibly from a 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet wrecking event) and a possible pipeline (or cable) were identified in the remote sensing record within the near shore area. All are recommended for avoidance.
