Summary
The Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast has contracted with PBS&J to conduct a Phase I Archaeological Assessment of Site 8BR01641 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) in Brevard County, Florida. The purpose in visiting this site was to ascertain the extent, nature, and integrity of site 8BR01641, and to determine National Register of Historic Places (National Register) eligibility documents associated with the NOTU Site (8BR01641).
This archaeological assessment consisted of the relocation, site delineation, and National Register evaluation of the NOTU site. Definitive site boundaries were established after excavating a total of 181 STUs. Also, one 1x 2 meter test unit was excavated to obtain additional information pertaining to the southern end of the site. Based on a pedestrian walkover and subsurface shovel testing, site disturbance was evident in the southern end of the site and along the fence line that bisects the site. Two areas (Areas A and B) contain cultural deposits, represented by undisturbed shell and black earth middens. These loci were identified as the most intact and, therefore, most significant parts of the site.
Based on this archaeological assessment, Areas A and B of site 8BR01641 contain intact cultural deposits that are likely to offer information pertaining to subsistence and settlement pattern during the Malabar period of the Indian River region. We are, therefore, of the opinion that these two areas of site 8BR1641 should remain potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register. We also recommend that Areas A and B of site 8BR01641 be avoided by future soil disturbing activity.
In addition to the report, this digital resource also contains related correspondence and aerial imagery.
