Historic Building Inventory and Evaluation: Alaska Radar System (ARS) Late Cold War Facilities

Summary

The Alaska Radar System (ARS), which currently consists of 15 active Long Range Radar Sites (LRRS) throughout Alaska, is an essential component of North America’s air defense. It provides air space surveillance, early warning against attack, intercept control, and navigational assistance to both military and civilian aircraft. It is administered by the Eleventh Air Force, through the 611th Air Support Group (611 ASG) headquartered at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER) in Anchorage, Alaska. The following document is a Historic Building Inventory and Evaluation (HBIE) of late Cold War properties within the ARS equipped with Minimally Attended Radar (MAR) and Unattended Radar (UAR). None of the sites were considered eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) individually or as a district.
