Summary
Northern Land Use Research Alaska, LLC (NLURA) was contracted by New South Associates, Inc. (NSA) to complete National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility evaluations for two vessels beached at Eareckson Air Station, Shemya Island, Alaska, on behalf of the United States Air Force, 611th Civil Engineer Squadron (USAF 611 CES). The need for evaluations was based on recommendations in the 2010 Integrated Cultural Resource Management Plan (ICRMP) for Eareckson Air Station. The vessels evaluated were Barge No. 18, a tank barge which broke from its tow and stranded on October 22, 1958; and F/V Opty, a commercial fishing vessel that grounded during a storm on December 3, 1988.
Barge No. 18 is potentially eligible for nomination to the NRHP under Criterion A, as she is associated with event(s) that made a significant contribution to the broad pattern of history postwar growth of commercial aviation, specifically pioneering Great Circle routes across the North Pacific Ocean.
