Summary

This report outlines the history of Wake Atoll’s water systems from 1935 to the present with a particular emphasis on the construction and operation of those facilities and structures associated with desalination activities and water production. It is broken down into four main components. This report is not intended to be an authoritative account of either the history of Wake Atoll or the history of desalination. Rather it is intended to provide contextual information about the significance and development of the water system, on Wake Atoll, and to account for the different technological and architectural features that supported the ongoing function of the atoll’s water systems. This is an aspect of Wake’s history that has been underrepresented in both historical treatments of the atoll and previous cultural resource assessments.
