Summary

This is a forum/panel proposal presented at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have seen a rise of anti-racist protests due to the death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others. The protests have brought attention to the Black Lives Matters movement, the fight for social justice, and the impact of structural racism. This forum focuses on how these events and issues have affected the work and profession of historical archaeology. Given this window of opportunity to enact practices that could change the state of racial inequity in archaeology, how do we weave anti-racism into the fabric of our practices? Can history be written, understood, and explained through a different lens? How do we practice archaeologies that are relevant to contemporary people’s struggles for justice, and that hold us accountable for our role in enabling or fighting racism? This forum will involve a discussion of various anti-racism strategies in archaeology, especially in light of Covid-19.
