Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Historical Archaeology in a Digital Age (General Sessions)" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

In 2017 the SHA Collections and Curation Committee formed a sub-committee to collect information about archaeological repositories across the United States. This year-long survey resulted in the recordation of 102 repositories, with each state in the US having at least one respondent. The data obtained for this work was then integrated into a publicly-available interactive map. While the initial focus was on curation fees, this follow up study examines how these repositories provide access to their collection data. This paper will review the original survey and attempt, through a content analysis study of the repository websites, to see how well they are providing access to digital archaeological data. The review will consider aspects of open data, scholarly publishing and public outreach, looking for commonalities in access and metadata. The resulting data will be available on the SHA website.
