Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Islands of Time (General Sessions)" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

From 2016 to 2019, archaeological monitoring was performed within the Charlotte Amalie Historic District in conjunction with the Main Street Enhancement Project, an infrastructural project in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Extended monitoring and data recovery resulted in the discovery of a range of features and intact deposits associated with the historic occupation of the town. This presentation summarizes the initial results of this extended monitoring project and characterizes the features exposed during infrastructural excavations. Accordingly, this presentation offers a detailed summary of structural, infrastructural, and utilitarian features documented during archaeological monitoring and offers new data regarding eighteenth and nineteenth century urban development. As infrastructure and future development will continue to encroach on archaeological resources within the historic districts of the USVI, this research will inform long-term preservation planning and the continued documentation of resources throughout neighboring islands.
