Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Remote Archaeology: Taking Archaeology Online in the Wake of COVID-19" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
Archaeologists with Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, Maryland established a vibrant and diverse public archaeology program decades ago. As soon the pandemic hit and it became clear that our 2020 initiatives would not be quite what we anticipated, we partnered with park historic sites to create bite-sized programming to distribute on social media. After a few months, Park management implemented ambitious virtual summer camps and we were forced to rethink how to bring archaeology to children without the tangible link that our field usually provides. In the end, however, this challenge has inspired creative new programming that can be used and modified for years to come.
