Online Programs About Archaeology At The National Arts Club

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Remote Archaeology: Taking Archaeology Online in the Wake of COVID-19" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

As Chair of The National Arts Club's Archaeology Committee, it has been my privilege to organize numerous events. Offerings generally feature scholars residing near Manhattan or others coordinating travel to accommodate our schedule.

The series was cancelled in April. The Club commenced broadcasting online. In August, Donald Sanders handled Virtual Reality followed by Julie Anderson on British Museum excavations in Sudan. September focused on La Florida with Jerald Milanich and Corinth with Ioulia Tzonou. Maltese Ambassador Frazier celebrated International Archaeology Day in October. Elizabeth Macauley-Lewis treated Classical Architecture during November. In December, Paul Cartledge discussed Thebes.

Participants, numbering 200 to 450, register with the Club. Programs entail rehearsals with its technical staff. Speakers can be located in any country with timing allowing interested attendees to join. Some lecturers have presented previously. Are they equally effective in both formats? I look forward to analyzing results of operating within this new normal.
