More Screen Time: Creating Equitable Programming Access via Zoom?

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Remote Archaeology: Taking Archaeology Online in the Wake of COVID-19" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

The Florida Public Archaeology Network's Southeast and Southwest Regions are located in a global COVID-19 hotspot. As schools, library programs, and summer camps were cancelled due to the accelerated progress of the disease through Miami and other cities, the authors sought to engage children remotely through an online archaeology activity hour, supported by a free activity kit that was mailed out to children before the program began. Students had the option of going through the activities on their own time, off-line, or with the support of FPAN staff over Zoom. This paper will explore the insights gained by this program, and examine strategies to improve access to information for future programs.
