Descendant Community and the Transcontinental Railroad: Intersection of Archaeology and Real Life
Author(s): Karen Kwan; Margaret Yee
Year: 2021
Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Transitioning from Commemoration to Analysis on the Transcontinental Railroad in Utah: Papers in Honor and Memory of Judge Michael Wei Kwan" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
In the years leading up to the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad’s completion, the Chinese Railroad Workers Descendants Association (CRWDA) formed in order to organize the celebration of the contributions of the Chinese to this international event. Coalescing in Salt Lake City, the CRWDA hosted several years of well-attended public conferences, hosted tours to Golden Spike National Historical Park for the annual May 10 celebrations, and raised public awareness across the globe. This paper will be a series of video interviews with key players in the CRWDA, and their relationship to the archaeology of their ancestors still left out in the rural parts of Utah’s northwestern corner.
