An Archaeological Survey of 4,690 Acres on Melrose Air Force Range, Curry and Roosevelt Counties, New Mexico

Part of the Melrose Air Force Range Resources project

Author(s): Chris Lowry; Brian Knight; Cody Browning

Year: 2000

Summary

The survey was conducted on several parcels located on the southeastern portion of the range. Seven archaeological sites were discovered during the course of the survey along with 24 isolated occurrences. Six of the sites date to the Historic period and are associated with early homesteading and ranching activities. One site is multicomponent, containing both prehistoric and historic period remains. Two sites were recommended as potentially eligible for the NRHP based on their potential to further our understanding of both prehistoric hunter-gatherer activities, as well as historic period homesteading and ranching activities. The remaining five sites were recommended as not eligible for the NRHP.
