ROI086, The Battles of Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio: Technical Battlefield Report

Summary

The purpose of this project was to build community consensus for the amendment of a National Register of Historic Places (NHRP) nomination for the battlefield of the Battle of the Wabash (1971) and the Battle of Fort Recovery ( 1794). Data and community interest from the ABPP 2010 (GA-2255-10-002) and 2013 (GA-2287-13-002) archaeological grant projects were the foundation of this Planning & Consensus Building project. Ball State University (BSU) developed and will submit a National Register nomination that best fits the preservation goals and development objectives of the community to the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board for review. The current NRHP form from 1971 (Appendix A) provides no boundaries or size and contains very few details relevant to NRHP criteria and is inadequate as a preservation planning tool. An updated and detailed NRHP nomination provides the community with a much needed foundation on which to build future preservation and interpretation efforts. Maps were produced showing National Register boundaries based on the application of National Register criteria and integrity guidelines (National Register Bulletins 16a, 25, 40). Additional maps were produced that show the entire battlefield boundaries to be used by the community, Fort Recovery Historical Society, and Fort Recovery State Museum for future planning and interpretive efforts.
