Summary

This report documents the methods and results of a study to inventory and evaluate a total of six Titan I and Titan II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) launch complexes on the northern portion of Vandenberg Air Force Base (AFB) in Santa Barbara County, California. The 30th Civil Engineer Squadron Installation Management Flight, Environmental Section, Environmental Assets (30 CES/CEIEA) at Vandenberg AFB initiated a study performed by Applied EarthWorks, Inc. to identify the historical significance and integrity of each complex and its eligibility for the NRHP. In addition, these six complexes were evaluated as a potential historic district. Having reached 50 years of age, the Titan I and II ICBM testing and training facilities at Vandenberg AFB required formal evaluation of their historical significance following National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria in order to meet the requirements of Section 106 and Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended, and Air Force Instruction (AFI) 32-7065, dated November 19, 2014. In addition to evaluating NRHP significance, Applied EarthWorks also identified relevant aspects of integrity, detailed the condition of each resource, and provided best management practices for stabilization and/or preservation of NRHP-eligible properties identified during this study so that Vandenberg AFB can meet its responsibilities under Section 110 of the NHPA and requirements established by AFI 32-7065.
