Summary

This report documents the condition of sensitive and threatened cultural resources examined during the winter of FY08. Chapter 1 of this report lists the sites examined and briefly describes methods specific to inspection of sensitive and threatened sites. The condition of sensitive and threatened cultural resources is summarized in Chapter 2, including newly discovered damage caused by wild pigs. Recommendations for the inspected sites are included in Chapter 4, and Chapter 5 summarizes the results. Chapter 6 is a list of references cited in this report. Appendix A consists of Cultural Resources Condition Reports documenting the condition of each sensitive and threatened site. Color slides taken at each site are bound separately.

Table 1-1 lists the sensitive and threatened sites examined during FY08. The number of sensitive and threatened sites, originally set at 25, increased to 31 during the first few years of inspections. In FY99 and FY00 only 29 sites were inspected because CA-SBA-224 and -225 were inaccessible due to the seasonal presence of nesting snowy plovers. All 31 sites were accessed during the FY03 investigations. For FY08, CA-SBA-650 and -677 were dropped from the list of sensitive and threatened sites based on observed improved conditions and the recommendations of the FY03 report. At the same time, five sites were added to the list either because of noticeably degraded conditions or because site deposits were deemed of greater sensitivity than previously realized. These additional sites include CA-SBA-228/H, -734, -739, -972, and -1040. The list of sensitive and threatened sites now numbers 34.
