Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana: National Register Evaluative Testing at Prehistoric Sites 16BO450, 16BO458, and 16BO473, Barksdale Air Force Base, Bossier Parish, Louisiana

Summary

Archeological testing was conducted at three previously recorded prehistoric sites (16BO450, 16B0458, and 16B0473) on Barksdale Air Force Base, Bossier Parish, Louisiana, in order to determine their significance and eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and to develop recommendations for the continued management of these resources. In April-May 2004, Geo-Marine, Inc., of Plano, Texas, was contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, to conduct the archeological testing assessment of sites 16BO450, 16BO458, and 16BO473. Shovel testing and limited test unit excavation were conducted on all three sites. Due to the lack of integrity, site 16BO450 is recommended as not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Site 16BO458 has good integrity, but the artifact assemblage is too sparse to yield useful information to address research domains, so it is also recommended as not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. However, site 16BO473 has good integrity and the abundance and diversity of artifact remains necessary to investigate a wide range of research domains to make a substantial contribution to the region. Accordingly, 16BO473 is recommended as eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. All materials obtained from the testing phase of the project will be curated with the 8th Air Force Museum, Barksdale AFB. Louisiana.
