Summary
USDA Forest Service Inventory Standards and Accounting Form completed in support of an assessment by the Environmental Restoration Project of Sandia National Laboratories. The project has proposed to seal vertical and horizontal shafts at three historic mine sites in order to mitigate perceived safety hazards. on lands withdrawn from the Sandia Ranger District by the Department of Defense. The three historic mine sites are located on lands withdrawn from the Sandia Ranger District by the Department of Defense. The sites: LA 81721 (FS 05-268), LA 81725 (FS 05-272), and LA 81731 (FS 05-278), were also evaluated for edibility to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). LA 81721 is recommended eligible under criterion "D"; filling in of the open shaft is regarded as No Adverse effect. LA 81725 is recommended as NOT eligible for the National Register, and no finding of effect is called for. Site LA 81731 was previously determined eligible in early 1996, apparently based on the prehistoric component. The report recommends that the historic component does not contribute to the qualities that qualify the site for Register and that filling in of the mine shaft will not adversely effect the site. New Mexico State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) correspondence is also included.
