Summary

This report presents the results of an intensive archaeological survey of 3,789 acres of Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. A total of 305 artifacts were recovered from 282 isolated artifactual loci; and 15 archaeological sites were located, recorded, and artifactually sampled. Two of these sites are provisionally assigned to the Archaic period (5000 B.C. - A.D. 1). One of them is a functionally specific site where lithic materials were collected and tool manufacturing was performed. Three sites are of the late Developmental-early Coalition transitional period (A.D. 1100-1250) of the Anasazi tradition. In addition, one site is an Historic Pueblo site of a period (1692-1821) hitherto undocumented on base. The remaining nine sites are related to late nineteenth and early twentieth century (1890-1930) mining, habitation, and transportation functions. Livestock herding and mineral water bottling are two additional activities which probably occurred at certain historic sites.
