Year: 1990

Summary

On April 11, 12, 17, and 20, and May 16 and 31, 1990, the Office of Archaeological Studies (formerly the Research Section of the Laboratory of Anthropology), Museum of New Mexico, conducted an archaeological survey of seven abandoned mine locations in the Tijeras and Placitas mining districts, New Mexico (Fig. 1). The survey was conducted at the request of Denise Gallegos of the Abandoned Mine Land Bureau (AMLB), New Mexico Department of Energy and Minerals, to determine the nature, extent, and significance of cultural resources within the project area. The AMLB proposes to seal mechanically, fill by hand, or collapse 22 existing adits or portals and 11 open shafts. This report identifies cultural resources within the project area and makes recommendations for avoidance of the resources not slated for closure.
