Archaeological Evaluation Of The Aerial Cable Site At Sandia National Laboratories, Bernalillo County, New Mexico: Special Technical Report 2
Part of the Kirtland Air Force Base Project Metadata project
Author(s): Steven R. Hoagland
Year: 1992
Summary
An archaeological survey was conducted by archaeologists with Chambers Group Inc. (CGI) on approximately 579 ha (1,447 acres) of property situated within Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB), Bernalillo County, New Mexico. This survey was conducted on the Burn Site, Aerial Cable Site (ACS), and portions of the surrounding area for Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). This inventory yielded 1 previously recorded and 40 newly discovered cultural resource sites and 80 isolated occurrences (IOs). One previously recorded site was not relocated. Two Archaic, 17 Anasazi, 11 Prehistoric and multicomponent sites, and 5 undated sites were recorded. Six are historic sites apparently associated with the mining activities that were conducted periodically in the area during the first half of the twentieth century. Two additional historic components were recorded on prehistoric sites. The remaining historic site (LA 81730) has a potential lime kiln and associated structures that may date to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Within the ACS project area, 2 prehistoric sites, 3 historic sites, and 34 isolated occurrences were recorded. Also, two prehistoric sites (LA 38910/53673 and LA 53674) and one historic site (LA 64559) that had been recorded during previous archaeological surveys in the Burn Site vicinity were found within or immediately adjacent to the ACS area.
Document also includes correspondence on the project from Human Systems Research, Department of Energy (DOE), and Sandia National Laboratories.
