Summary
Butler Service Group Inc. (BSG) conducted cultural resource surveys for approximately 36.47 acres of property situated within Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB), Bernalillo County, New Mexico. The surveys were conducted through International Technology Corporation for Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico (SNL/NM) Sitewide Environmental Restoration (ER) Program. The surveys were conducted for four well and five borehole drill sites. These nine sites are scattered throughout the west central portion of Kirtland Air Force Base. All of the drill sites are situated on properties owned by the U. S. Department of Defense. The areas surveyed include the nine drill locales with buffer zone~ three access routes, and one two track road locale that will probably have to be graded Paved, dirt, or two-track roads which will not have to be modified, provide access into six of the drill site buffer zones.
Three isolated occurrences (IOs), were encountered during this survey. The IOs, which were all located in vicinity of Borehole 95B4, include a chalcedony decortication flake (IO #1), a quartzite decortication flake (IO #2), and an obsidian biface fragment (IO #3). Isolated Occurrences #2 and #3 were situated in an existing dirt road. These three isolated occurrences are no longer thought to be potentially significant as all important information has been recovered through field recordation. For this reason, these items are no longer thought to be eligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places.
Based on the apparent lack of significant cultural resources, a no effect determination is recommended for this undertaking. Therefore, cultural resource clearance is recommended for the proposed drilling to be conduced at the nine Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico (SNL/NM) Sitewide Environmental Restoration (ER) Program well and borehole drill locations.
