Summary
On August 20, 1992, Advanced Sciences, Inc. conducted a cultural resource survey of two maintenance sites within Technical Area Ill at Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico (SNl/NM). This report discusses the reconnaissance performed at Maintenance Site 1, an area encompassing 4.64 acres (1.85 hectares). Actual pedestrian survey coverage was 2.95 acres (1.17 hectares), as the area inside of an existing locked maintenance facility could not be inspected except by looking through the fence.
Approximately one-third of Maintenance Site 1 is encompassed by a chain-link-fenced storage facility. This area, as well as a 125-foot (37.8 meters) by 375-foot (113.6 meters) area adjacent to the northern area and a 225-foot (68 meters) by 300-foot (90.9 meters) adjacent eastern area have undergone extensive surface blading and maintenance disturbance.
The maintenance area inside the chain-link fence was locked and was visually inspected by looking through the fence at its perimeters. The area has been bladed, maintained, and is covered by a thin layer of base gravel. It is doubtful that any cultural resources are located within the facility.
Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico (SNL/NM) proposes to expand Maintenance Site 1. This action will be undertaken to facilitate an increased need for additional storage facilities.
No prehistoric or historic cultural resources were located by this inspection. The structures within Maintenance Site 1 are less then 50 years of age. It is felt that no significant cultural artifacts, features, or structures qualifying under the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D are present within the inspection area.
It is recommended that cultural resource clearance be granted for Maintenance Site 1.
