Summary
On March 4, 1993, Advanced Sciences, Inc. conducted a cultural resource survey of an approximate 3.44-acres (1.39-hectare) disturbed area in advance of a proposed road realignment in Area I at Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico (SNL/NM). This report discusses the reconnaissance performed for the proposed road, and of the area surrounding the realignment.
The entire area has undergone extensive construction and maintenance disturbance. The surface has been used as a fill dirt and gravel dump for construction activities in the immediate vicinity. As a result the ground surface is slightly higher then the surrounding terrain, and a linear, vertically aligned series of berms approximately 12 feet (3.6 meters) tall are deposited along the east side of the survey area. These berms are formed from soil removed from other areas on Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico (SNL/NM) during construction, and contain recent building-related debris. The berms will not be impacted by the proposed road realignment
No prehistoric or historic cultural resources were located by this inspection and no structures are located within the survey area. The construction debris located during the inspection is modem, and the only structural features are several wire fences, an improved dirt road, and an electric powerline. It is felt that no significant cultural artifacts, features, or structures qualifying under National Register of Historic Places Criterion D are present within the inspected area
It is recommended that cultural resource clearance be granted for the proposed road realignment.
