Summary
In 1998, SWCA, Inc. completed a cultural resources survey of proposed scaling and slope modifications of New Mexico State Road 337, along with an equipment staging area and access road, near the Village of Tijeras, in the Sandia Ranger District of Cibola National Forest, in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. The survey examined 14 segments of the right-of-way for a total of about 1.1 linear miles (ca. 6,070 ft). The project included about 5.5 ha (13.6 acres) of USDA Forest Service land (New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department easement) and about 0.9 ha ( 2.3 acres) of New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department land.
The study included an ARMS and Forest Service files check, a review of the current published listings for the National Register of Historic Places and State Register of Cultural Properties, and a pedestrian survey. The files check revealed 31 previously recorded archaeological sites within 1.0 km of the project area. One of the previously recorded sites, LA 13284, occurs within the current study area. No historic structures or isolated occurrences were found within the study area.
We recommend that LA 13284 be fenced and avoided during the proposed project, in which case the project will have no effect on the site. Otherwise, we do not recommend any further cultural resource studies of the proposed improvements to NM 337. If previously unknown cultural resources are encountered during construction, work in that area should be halted and the NMSHTD Environmental Program should be notified. If human remains are encountered during construction, work in that area should be halted and the Bernalillo County Sheriff should be notified.
