Summary
Archeological Phase I surveys were carried out for two facilities of the 90th Regional Support Command (RSC) in New Mexico from September 28 - 30, 1998. Previously, an archeological assessment of 6 RSC facilities owned by the 90th RSC in New Mexico revealed no recorded archeological sites within 4 facilities and too little potential for archeological sites to warrant a survey at those locations. The remaining two facilities were considered to have high potential for archeological resources, and include the Gallagher Memorial USARC in Las Cruces and the Phillips Memorial US ARC in Silver City. These two facilities contain a combined total of 10 acres, of which an estimated 6 acres was recommended for archeological survey. The New Mexico State Historic Preservation Office concurred with these findings of this report in a letter dated January 8, 1998.
The surveys included systematic shovel testing in areas believed to retain subsurface integrity within both of the facilities. Collectively, a total of 19 shovel test pits (STPs) was excavated at the facilities, across an actual total of 3 acres. No artifacts greater than 50 years of age were recovered either in STPs, or from surface collection, and no archeological sites were identified. Field investigations revealed that mission-related land use has disturbed the soils throughout both facilities, and eliminated the possibility of locating intact archeological resources. No further investigation of the 90th RSC facilities in New Mexico was recommended, and the New Mexico State Historic Preservation Office concurred in a letter dated February I, 1999.
