Cultural Resource Survey of Installation Restoration Program Sites, Kirtland Air Force Base, Bernalillo County, New Mexico

Summary

TRC Mariah Associates Inc. completed a Class III Cultural Resource Inventory of 48 areas within 31 Installation Restoration Program sites on Kirtland Air Force Base, Bernalillo County, New Mexico. The project encompassed approximately 306 acres (124 ha). Survey was conducted by TRC Mariah Project Archaeologist John C. Acklen between August 28 and 31, 1995 and by John C. Acklen and John A. Evaskovich, Project Archaeologists, between May 16 and May 21, 1996. Three archaeological sites and three isolated occurrences were located during survey. The sites include two mining sites (LA 103146 and LA 113095) and a dump (LA 71432) related to the earliest military uses of Kirtland Air Force Base. The data potential of the isolated occurrences and two mining sites, LA 103146 and LA 113095, is considered exhausted by survey-level documentation. Consequently, the isolates and these two sites are recommended as not eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Whereas the third site, LA 71432, contains artifacts dating to early military usage of Kirtland Air Force Base, environmental testing conducted in conjunction with the Installation Restoration Program indicates that the deposits are largely surficial. Survey documentation has exhausted the data potential of these artifacts. LA 71432 is not recommended as eligible to the National Register of Historic Places.
