Cultural Resource Assessment of Impact by an F-117 Stealth Aircraft Crash and Related Clean-up Activities, Zuni Indian Reservation, McKinley and Cibola Counties

Author(s): Jonathan E. Damp

Year: 1997

Summary

The undertaking involves the assessment of impact to cultural resources caused by the crash of an F-117 aircraft and the resulting clean-up activities. The survey conducted on Pueblo of Zuni Trust land included inspection of an area around the crater that represents the crash site of the F-117 aircraft, inspection of an access road, and inspection of a deployment area.

The literature search identified eight previously recorded archaeological sites within 1.6 km (1 mi) of the project. The archaeological survey revealed two new archaeological sites, five isolated occurrences and no previously recorded sites within the project area. An additional cultural feature was observable in the months after the crash. This feature, now destroyed, was recorded during an earlier field visit.

Zuni Cultural Resource Enterprise recommends that the following newly recorded sites be considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) based on criterion (d): sites LA 119357 and LA 119358.
