Cultural Resources Inventory of the Manzano Storage Area, Kirtland Air Force Base, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Part 1: Pre Cold War Resources

Summary

In December 1994, a cultural resources inventory was conducted of the 2,880-acre Manzano Storage Area at Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. A pedestrian survey was done of all undisturbed areas of less than 45% slope. A total of 287 acres were disturbed or steeper than 45 % , thus 2,593 acres were surveyed. This block area survey provides information useful for cultural resources management, including the Cultural Resources Management Plan now being produced, and was not conducted in response to any specific proposed action.

Twenty-seven sites and 160 isolated occurrences' were recorded and mapped. Twenty-two sites include prehistoric components; two included Archaic Period components; 16 included Puebloan Period components, and four were of undetermined prehistoric temporal affiliation. All of these sites were camps or special use sites of varying size and duration. Fourteen sites included historic components related to ranching, mining, or homesteading.
