Summary
An archaeological inventory was completed on a 36-acre parcel of land located on United States Forest Service Cibola National Forest, lands withdrawn to Kirtland Air Force Base (AFB), New Mexico. A proposal to construct a 54,000 SF structure (Telescope Atmospheric Compensation Laboratory, TAC Lab) on withdrawn lands has been presented to Kirtland AFB by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). One previously recorded site is located within the current project area. Site #AR 03-03-05-429/LA 113905 was recorded in 1996 as a mineshaft, mining camp, a cairn and a prospect pit. The location of the site was initially recorded incorrectly and a feature was missed during the initial survey. An updated site form has been completed. The information potential of AR 03-03-05-429/LA 113905 has been exhausted. Based on available information, there is no indication that the mine and related features are, "...associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of history"; or that it is "...associated with the lives of persons significant in our past." The area did not produce enough ores to contribute greatly to the mining industry. The site is recommended ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places. Based on the record search and the archaeological inventory, it is recommended that no further archaeological studies be completed for this project.
