Summary
Subsurface testing of LA 2014 at Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB), New Mexico found that the tested area, the location of several clusters of cobbles previously identified as possible prehistoric features, does not contain subsurface cultural deposits. Moreover, the testing suggests that the features identified by previous archaeological research may in fact be Pleistocene deposits. In 2004, the environmental branch at Kirtland Air Force Base contracted with engineering-environmental Management, Inc. (e2M) to investigate whether expanding the fence would affect subsurface archaeological deposits (Contract F44650.99.D.0004). The project involved surface examination and the placement of 13 1x1m test units to determine if fence posts would affect subsurface archaeological deposits. The new fence posts would have been used to extend a fence now standing at the site. The existing fence was designed to protect features from off-road vehicular traffic. One of the fence posts for the existing fence was placed in what was considered a potential feature. The testing therefore also evaluated whether this fence post had disturbed subsurface archaeological deposits. The testing project found only two pieces of lithic debitage in the 13 1x1m test units placed in the area of Features 4, 5, and 6. In addition, the project found no indications of subsurface archaeological features. Rather, the site appears to consist of a light surface scatter of artifacts on thin soil over cobbles in Pleistocene sediments. In sum, what remains of the site does not require protection from vehicular traffic through the extension of the existing protective fence.
