Summary
This report describes the results of testing at LA 38136, a multi-component site that includes a Folsom artifact scatter, a Late Developmental-Coalition Period artifact scatter, and a series of small stone structures that date to the early historic Period. To determine whether the site warranted protection and potentially stabilization, we placed seven 1 x 1 m excavation units at the site’s three loci. Testing of the site led to three primary discoveries.
First, the Folsom component is only shallowly buried. However, that component has definite Folsom diagnostic artifacts and undoubtedly preserves some spatial integrity. Given the rarity of Paleoindian sites in general and at Kirtland Air Force Base in particular, this component merits protection from vehicle traffic.
The second discovery is that the Late Developmental to Coalition component appears to be more ephemeral than at nearby sites (for example, LA 100149 and LA 110420 (Hill and Larson 1995). This component is an important data point in understanding the dense Late Developmental-Coalition occupation of Coyote Canyon to the east, but it appears to represent very ephemeral use of the landscape and not seasonal occupation.
Third, the site preserves a historic component that dates to the 1700s and therefore represents a poorly understood period in the area’s occupation. This component, which includes multiple structures, including at least one with stratified subsurface cultural deposits, warrants protection from off-road vehicle use.
