The Artifacts of Arnold’s Bay: Following the Diaspora of Material Culture Over Time

Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Arnold's Bay Project" , at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
This paper will explore the material culture associated with Arnold’s Bay, a Revolutionary War battlefield site, from the pre-Columbian era through the Revolution and into today. Since the battle took place, people have been removing objects from the site starting with British salvage efforts, to local relic hunters, through an era of avocational excavations, to professional excavations beginning in the 1980s. By following the diaspora of material culture taken from Arnold’s Bay through time, we can piece together a more complete context from which the material culture was removed, updating our understanding and interpretation of events that have taken place at this site. Recent interviews and the discovery of ‘new’ primary documents within Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s research collections have provided new insights – as well as more questions to investigate in the future.
