The Long Wait: Revisiting Treatments

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Current Research at Texas A&M University's Conservation Research Laboratory" , at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Since the Conservation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University was established, we have strived to conserve artifacts to the best of our ability and ethical standards, adapting with the needs of the artifacts, current literature, and available treatments. Although we frequently speak to our clients about the condition of artifacts we have treated in the past, this method is subjective and piecemeal. We are beginning to develop long-term comparative studies for a variety of treatments. The first two studies will focus on the coatings used for iron treatments and the treatment of waterlogged rubber. The goal of these studies is to determine the long-term stability of the treatments under different environmental conditions in order to provide the best care possible to the artifacts, and to determine if any treatments lead to adverse effects and how best to mitigate them.
