Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)" , at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
Since 2000, the Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has been monitoring four shipwrecks as a part of their Atlantic Coast of New Jersey Cultural Resource Monitoring Program. The objective of this program is to determine whether, and to what extent, burial by beach renourishment sand impacts and/or protects the resources within the project area. The wrecks monitored include Chauncey Jerome, Jr., listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), Adonis/Rusland and Western World, both listed as eligible for listing on the NRHP, and the Amity, which is ineligible, but has received considerable attention from local divers and historians. Providing state-of-the art methods to record exposure and integrity at each site, the most recent monitoring phase included high-resolution 3D bathymetric modeling which allowed for centimetric accurate site assessments and establishes new baseline data for future monitoring investigations.
