Preliminary Results Project Naval Shipwrecks in West Indies during the American Revolutionary Period 1774-1783

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)" , at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

This paper aims to present preliminary results of the first year of the project dealing with three naval shipwrecks sites in West Indies. In English Harbour (Antigua) the remains of a wreck possibly identified as the Lyon (ex Beaumont) are evaluated. The first archaeological assessment indicates the presence of a large wooden hull and ballast pile shallow water in the Tank Bay area. In Castries (Saint-Lucia) the first research to localize two English vessels (HMS Cornwall and Thetis) did not succeed. In Kingstown (Saint-Vincent) the remains first studied in 1998 of a French frigate possibly Junon are presented. This site presents the remains of a large historic shipwreck in a mixed sandy reef botom area in a 33 m depth.
