Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)" , at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
During the rise of the USSR the systemic removal of culturally significant landscapes, buildings, and institutions was prevalent. The destruction of iconic architecture and the degradation of key cultural landscapes resulted with the removal of religious paraphernalia integral to Georgian culture. This paper will explore the different forms of cultural brutalization within the Soviet Union against Georgian citizens; the demolition of the Churches, chief religious figures, and faith. With what little physical remains of the 5th and 6th Century churches such as Mtskheta and Anchiskhati Basilica of St Mary, anthropologists have been able to regain some of the deeply rooted religious culture that has been bulldozed.
