Summary
This is a poster submission presented at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
Due to the prolonged impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic hindering management efforts within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), Indiana University Center for Underwater Science directors and scientific divers selected two shipwrecks on the upper Keys portion of the FKNMS Shipwreck Trail to asses the conditions of the sanctuary in May of 2021. The sites surveyed were the City of Washington and the Benwood shipwrecks. The team performed site assessments in effort to update archaeological integrity, site maintenance, and survey. IU established biological monitoring stations, useful for management of the sites. This poster works to be a guideline for NOAA Marine Sanctuary management to begin improvements on the sites based on observations made in the rapid assessments of the two specified shipwrecks.
