Resisting the River: Site Monitoring and Erosion at Fort Eustis, Virginia
Author(s): Courtney J. Birkett
Year: 2022
Summary
This is a poster submission presented at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
In 2010 the Fort Eustis Cultural Resources Management staff implemented a site monitoring program in which known archaeological sites at the installation are visited regularly. As erosion of archaeological sites located along the James and Warwick rivers is a long-running problem, in 2015 the measurement of erosion from known points was added to the assessment of high-risk sites. The overall monitoring program has provided a baseline knowledge of site conditions and regular opportunities to observe any disturbance. The ability to quantify the amount of erosion that occurs is providing impetus to devise and fund ways to mitigate the damage to the sites.
