Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "What’s in a Name? Discussions of Terminology, Theory and Infrastructure of Citizen Science in Maritime Archaeology" , at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
The Maritime Archaeological and Historical Society (MAHS) is an all volunteer, nonprofit, educational organization created in 1988 by recreational scuba divers for fellow recreational scuba divers. Our mission is to protect historic shipwrecks for future generations to explore and enjoy. MAHS education and training programs are distributed across the USA and to various locations worldwide. These programs prepare recreational divers to pursue underwater archaeology as an avocation and MAHS volunteers participate in underwater archeology projects around the world. MAHS activities include research, education, advocacy and diving. Social media activities including the publication of MAHSnews, MAHSmail, the MAHS Facebook page and the MAHSnet.org website all play a significant role in the emerging public awareness that shipwrecks are not for harvesting private collections but valuable time capsules of historic events and that we are all stewards of these irreplaceable cultural icons and the engaging stories they reveal about our collective past.
