Archaeological Investigations for Proposed Tactical Training Base, Tennessee Army National Guard, at Arnold Air Force Base

Summary

Summary report of the phase I archaeological survey project that was initiated to evaluate the effects on cultural resources from the proposed construction on the tactical training base at Arnold Air Force Base. Investigations included a review of the existing site records, visual inspection and shovel testing. The records search indicated six sites were located within one mile of the project area, including Camp Forrest. Visual inspection showed that the project area has been subjected to heavy disturbance in the past, mainly from the use of the area during the Camp Forrest era and the demolition following its closure. No cultural material, other than the building foundations, was observed during visual inspection of the extensive bare ground and none was located within any of the shovel tests. This area is designated as a portion of the Nurses Quarters on the historic Camp Forrest map on file at Arnold Air Force Base. It is also labeled as a part of the 168th Field Artillery block. Over time this area undoubtedly changed purpose as the small gas station building identified in the northeastern corner of the project area from the aerial imagery does not appear on the map. No additional archaeological sites were recorded as a result of this investigation and the area is recommended cleared from a cultural resources perspective.
