Cultural Resource Survey for the Proposed Airfield Reopening and Expansion, Arnold Air Force Base, Coffee County, Tennessee

Summary

This project included a comprehensive pedestrian survey as well as a systematic shovel testing program of 460 acres, which was composed primarily of clear-cut terrain centering on the existing airstrip, a historical architectural assessment of a farm complex west of the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) boundary, and 17 buildings and structures associated with the airfield dating from as early as 1969. The intensive shovel testing survey included the excavation of systematically placed shovel tests at 30 m intervals. The survey recorded two items of lithic debris at different locations. These were designated as isolated finds and not assigned site numbers by the Tennessee Division of Archaeology (TDOA). The architectural assessment concluded that none of the structures met the requirements for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
