Geophysical Investigations at Huffar Cemetery Arnold Air Force Base Coffee and Franklin Counties, Tennessee - Final Report

Summary

In March 2010, AMEC Earth & Environmental conducted archaeo-geophysical investigations at Huffar Cemetery at Arnold Air Force Base, which consisted of magnetic and electrical resistance surveys covering a total area of approximately 0.44 acres. The purpose of the survey was to attempt to define the breadth of potential historic graves located at the cemetery, and provide a maximum approximate boundary for said graves. This information allows the base to more confidently use areas adjacent to this historic cemetery for the potential reburial of Native American remains and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) articles. The survey identified an area in conjunction with the two marked graves that appears consistently different from the surrounding area. It appears that there may be up to five graves located within this area. A boundary was established that encapsulates this location. This boundary appears to encapsulate all anomalies that have potential to be grave shafts, but it may be prudent from a management point of view to place any new internments outside of the broader boundaries of what appears to be the historic cemetery. This added measure should provide sufficient distance to ensure that new graves lie well outside of the potential historic cemetery locale.
